Prominent Honduras LGBT-rights activist Rene Martinez has been murdered, according to a Washington Blade article that cites La Prensa.
On June 1, Martinez's family reported him missing after he left his home and got into someone's car. The family identified his body two days later at San Pedro Sula's morgueand it was reported that Martinez, 40, had been strangled to death.
Martinez headed LGBT-rights group Comunidad Gay Sampedrana and was a members of the country's governing National Party. No one has been arrested.
Among many other accomplishments, Martinez participated in a leadership training in Honduras and Victory Fund & Institute's International LGBT Leadership Conference in 2015. In a Facebook post, the Victory Fund stated, "Victory is honored to work with courageous activists across the globe who put their lives on the line every day to achieve equality for all LGBTI people. Rest in power, Rene."
